1. Can you tell us about yourself?

  • It’s okay to talk about your hobbies and interests, but keep it brief. Focus on related work experience instead. Having related work experience will give you an edge over the competition.

2. Why do you want to work for Chapters?

Discuss your love of books, your passion for working with customers, and any charities Indigo sponsors such as the Love of Reading Foundation (dedicated to enhancing literacy by providing new books and resources to students).

3. What is your greatest strength?

  • To answer this question, describe the skills and experience that you have that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. With this in mind, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to perform the job.

4. What is your greatest weakness?

  • You should not deny you have a weakness or state strengths as a weakness (I am a perfectionist, or I work too hard and neglect my friends and family).  State a weakness that is required for the role but not a dealbreaker if you don’t have it.
  • When you state your weakness make sure you say what you are doing to overcome that weakness. For example, I have a fear of public speaking and I have enrolled in a public speaking class to overcome my fear.

  • In 2001, Chapters and Indigo merged to form the largest book reseller in Canada.

It is important to have a comprehensive selection across different genres, authors, and formats, catering to various interests and preferences. 8. What hours can you work?

  • Try to be flexible when answering this question. The more flexible you are with your hours, the better chance you will have of landing the job.
  • State you understand if you need to work weekends and holidays. 

9. How do you feel about standing for long periods of time?

  • If possible tell the interviewer you do not have a problem with this as most jobs in retail will require you to work on your feet for long periods of time. Try to wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

10. Where do you see yourself in five years?

  • If going to college or university state what you would like to be doing after you finish.
  • Have a look at other Chapters jobs and find a career you could see yourself doing in five years.
