1. What experience do you have?

  • If you have any restaurant or customer service experience now is the time to mention it.
  • If this is your first job don’t worry, tell them you have been focusing on school and now you are ready to prove yourself in the workforce.

2. Why do you want to work for Checkers?

Possible answers are:

  • Say you love the product (be ready to talk about your favorite menu item).
  • Mention you get excellent service at Checkers.
  • State you enjoy the challenge of working under pressure.
  • Finally, say you enjoy meeting new customers and making them feel welcome.

3. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

  • All Checkers employees start off as team members, then progress to shift manager, assistant manager, and then to general manager. Tell the interviewer if you are interested in one of these positions in the future (this will make you sound like you are willing to stay for the long haul so they won’t mind training you).
  • If you are going to school mention what you are studying in college and state you think Checkers is a great way to pay for college.
  • If you have a passion for the food industry mention you would like to become a chef.

4. What can you tell us about Checkers?

  • Checkers Drive-In is a chain of drive-thru restaurants that offers burgers, chicken burgers, wings, milkshakes, and fries.
  • Checkers and Rally’s merged in August of 1999.
  • The Checkers name remains used in the Southeast as well as the Northeast while the Rally’s name remains used in the Midwest as well as California; the two brands overlap in several areas.
  • The first restaurant opened in Mobile Alabama in 1986
  • The headquarters are in Tampa Bay Florida.
  • Checkers and Rally’s is in 28 states (including Washington DC).

5. How would you deal with an irate customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
  • Finally, one must not take it personally.  If you get upset, you will take it out on future customers.

6. Tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

  • Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which will, in turn, generate more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a specific dessert in the restaurant. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it and I got it for the customer.   
  • Here’s another example: I worked at a fast-food chain in my last job.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant and he had finished his meal. The rain started, and he started to worry because he didn’t have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

7. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long for their order.
  • Customers receive friendly service.
  • The restaurant is clean both inside and outside.
  • The product is made to order.

8. Why should I hire you?

  • Have a second read of the job description and find the skills and experience required for the position.
  • Next, match the skills required for the job to your skill set.
  • Finally, reassure the interviewer you have the right skills.

9. How do you feel about standing on your feet all day?

  • Most restaurant jobs will require you to work on your feet for long periods. If possible, let the interviewer know that you do not have a problem with this. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

10. What hours can you work?

  • The more flexible you are with your hours, the better your chance of getting hired, so be flexible!
  • Let the interviewer know if you can work on weekends and holidays.
