3. Are you available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays?

11. How would you deal with an upset customer?

Let’s examine real customer complaints. Based on the data we have compiled, we can see that customers complained most frequently about food quality, service, and staff attitude. The key is to listen, apologize, and ensure they leave happy when answering these questions.

Food Quality Scenario

Customer Complaint: “My rice was so undercooked that I could not enjoy my burrito bowl. One of the bowls had fresh tomato salsa included when that was not asked for.”

Sample Answer: “I would begin by empathizing with the upset customer and apologizing for their negative experience. To address the undercooked rice, I’d offer to replace their burrito bowl or provide a refund. Regarding the unintended fresh tomato salsa, I’d apologize for the mistake and offer to prepare a new burrito bowl with the correct ingredients.”

Service

Customer Complaint: “Sometimes, they only accept online orders and frequently run out of chips or tortillas.”

Sample Answer: “I would listen to the customer’s concerns, apologize for the inconvenience, and express our commitment to continuous improvement. I might offer a resolution such as a discount or future visit voucher and encourage them to provide feedback. Our goal is to ensure every customer has a positive experience.”

Customer Complaint: “The employees were understaffed and overworked. The cashier seemed tired, and her attitude was not polite”.

Sample Answer: “Thank you for your feedback; I’m sorry for any inconvenience. We’re actively addressing staffing issues to improve service. I deeply regret my attitude during our interaction, which didn’t meet our customer service standards. I’ll take your feedback to heart. To make up for your experience, I’d like to offer you a complimentary meal on your next visit. Your satisfaction is important to us, and we’re committed to providing a better experience in the future.”

12. How would you define excellent customer service at Chipotle?

Our analysis showed that food quality is the number one element of customer feedback at Chipotle, followed by service, staff attitude, cleanliness, and value for money. In our response, we will address all of these aspects except for food price, as it is beyond our control.

Sample Answer: “First, I would define excellent customer service as the quality of the food served. The food must be fresh, and warm, with the correct portion size. Next, I would ensure that customer service is top-notch, which means the staff is efficient, friendly, and attentive. Finally, the restaurant must be clean, which includes tables, workstations, and bathrooms.”

13. Can you describe a time when you went above and beyond to provide excellent customer service?

  • Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which will, in turn, generate more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a specific dessert in the restaurant. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it and I was able to get it for the customer.   
  • Here’s another example: I worked at a fast-food chain in my last job.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant and he had finished his meal. The rain started, and he started to worry because he didn’t have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

14. How do you handle conflicts or disagreements with coworkers?

Discuss how you attempt to understand your coworker’s perspective and involve your supervisor in reaching a common ground.

Sample Answer: “When conflicts arise with coworkers, I prioritize open communication and listening. I try to understand their viewpoint, find common ground, and work together on solutions. If necessary, I involve a supervisor to mediate. My goal is to maintain positive working relationships and resolve issues professionally.

15. What would you do if you observed a coworker not following food safety or cleanliness guidelines?

Explain that you would have private conversations with your coworkers to stress the importance of adhering to safety and cleanliness guidelines, and then emphasize your commitment to leading by example.

Sample Answer: “If I saw a coworker not following food safety or cleanliness rules, I’d talk to them privately and ask them to fix the issue. If it continued or was serious, I’d tell a supervisor. I’d also lead by example and encourage everyone to follow the rules.”

Stating you have any of the characteristics below is a great way to answer this question. 

  • Chipotle looks for motivated, enthusiastic, respectful, presentable, happy, polite, and high-energy individuals.

19. How do you feel about rotating stations?

  • You will more than likely rotate stations while working at Chipotle.  This means you can be working as a cashier or preparing food.  Say you have no problem rotating stations.

20. How do you feel about standing for long periods?

  • Most restaurant jobs will require you to work on your feet for long periods. If possible, let the interviewer know that you do not have a problem with this. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

21. Why is there a gap in your resume?

  • The best approach when answering this question is to be honest because being truthful about your situation gives the employer a sense of your integrity and confidence.
