How to Find and Land a Job Using Yelp

We all hear about how LinkedIn or Facebook can help you land the job, but what about using Yelp? Yelp can be a great tool to help you find work, research the company, and prep you for the interview.

For those of you who don’t know, Yelp is a social networking site designed to review local businesses in your area. For example, suppose you want to go out for dinner, and you want to know what people are saying about that new restaurant down the street. Users can log in, and post reviews of the restaurant for all to see. Based on the reviews posted by others, you can decide if you want to go there or not. Any company can be reviewed by former customers on Yelp.

Step 1 Find Work in Your Area

I myself live in a big city and commuting is one if my biggest issues. Yelp will show you all the businesses in a given area. With Yelp, you can build a list of companies you want to apply to that are close to where you live.  You can do this using Yelp’s “Nearby” feature on your smartphone.

When you find a place you want to apply to bookmark it. There is a bookmark button in the top right corner. Make note of the contact info in case you want to call them to see if they are hiring.

Step 2 Research the company

We all know you can research a company by going directly to their website, but this will not tell you what customers are saying.  By examining customer feedback on Yelp, you can determine if this business is a good place to work.

For example, if the business has 4 or a 5-star rating then odds are the product is great and the business is financially secure.

On the other hand, if the rating is low, the business is probably poorly managed and may not be financially stable. Odds are you’re an opportunity for advancement will be non-existent.

Step 3 Prep for the interview

Yelp is a great tool to prepare a great answer for commonly asked interview questions. Below are examples of commonly asked interview questions, and how you can use Yelp to answer them.

What can you tell us about this company?

Now is your chance to flatter them. Talk about any positive reviews regarding their products, and customer service. Do not mention any negative reviews.

How would you define excellent customer service?

If the company has received several four and five-star reviews, there will be several examples of excellent customer service.

I was reading about how a lady came in with her children in a popular fast food chain. She was extremely happy with the service because the person taking her order saw that she was with her children, and told her to have a seat.

She then went on to say not only did they bring the food to her table but they came back and asked if we needed anything else.

You can also find negative reviews and use them to your advantage.  At the same restaurant a different customer stated they enjoyed the food but the toilets and the parking lot were dirty.

So if I were to apply to this restaurant I would say great customer service is when you go out of your way to the customer.  For example, if the customer was occupied with their children in line I would tell them to sit down and I would bring the meal to them.  I would follow up with the customer and see if they needed anything.  Excellent customer service also means having a clean restaurant but cleanliness also extends to bathrooms and the outside like the parking lot.

How would you deal with an upset customer?

There is no shortage of upset customers on Yelp. Here you can find out why a customer is unhappy and come up with a response on how to keep a customer happy. For example, I was reading about a how one of the most popular retailers lineups where too long. Another customer was complaining about an incorrect price she was charged.  So be sure to list several complaints and learn how you would respond to them.

What is your greatest strength?

Find the negative reviews and state how your strengths will counter them.  For example, if you are applying for a cashier job and people are complaining because of the long line ups, state your greatest strength is your ability to work quickly under pressure.  If customers are complaining because of incorrect scanning you should say one of your greatest strengths is your attention to detail.

In conclusion, Yelp is a great tool to help you find work, find out if it is a good place to work, and prep you for the interview.

You could argue that Facebook is a great resource for customer feedback but business owners can delete negative reviews.   Yelp gives you true insight on how the company is performing.

Now these is a useful article. The article presented points, expanded on each of the points, and then gave clear and concise example(s) on each points.
I also have never thought of using Yelp the way that it was outlined in these article. Well Done! Keep up the good work!
