3. What hours can you work?

  • The more flexible you are with your hours, the better your chance of getting hired, so be flexible!
  • Let the interviewer know if you can work on weekends and holidays.

4. What is your greatest strength?

  • I am a quick learner (this is a great answer because they will have to spend less time training you)
  • I work well under pressure (this is a great answer because all restaurants have their rush hour and you need to stay focused during this time)

5. What is your greatest weakness?

7. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
  • Finally, one must not take it personally.  If you get upset, you will take it out on future customers.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

9. Why should I hire you?

For this question, you want to reread the job description, find the skills they are looking for, and restate those skills. Here is what I found after reviewing the store associate job description:

  • The candidate must have acceptable verbal English language communication skills, which include interpersonal conversational skills. (Skill excellent communication skills)
  • The associate is constantly asked to make correct change, which demands that he/she have basic math skills. (Skills: excellent at math)
  • The ability to adapt and follow instructions requires adequate comprehension skills (skill: quick learner)
  • The ability to follow directions from a supervisor (skill: attention to detail)
  • The ability to interact productively with co-workers (skill teamwork)

So when asked why should I hire you state:

  • Say you have excellent communication skills and will be able to work well with customers and other team members.
  • Mention you have excellent math skills and will have no issue using the cash register and making change.
  • State you are a quick learner.
  • Say you have great attention to detail.
  • Mention you work well independently but also in a team.

IN-N-OUT Burger offers a secret menu that is not really a big secret.  Here are the menu items on IN-N-Out Burgers “Not so secret menu”.

 

  • Double Meat:  Two beef patties, lettuce, tomato, spread, with or without onions, on a bun.
  • 3X3: Three beef patties, lettuce, tomato, spread, three slices of American cheese, with or without onions, on a bun.
  • 4X4:  Four beef patties, lettuce, tomato, spread, four slices of American cheese, with or without onions, on a bun.

10. How do you feel about standing on your feet for long periods?

  • Most restaurant jobs will require you to work on your feet for long periods. If possible, let the interviewer know that you do not have a problem with this. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

11. If you could be one animal what would it be?

Possible Answers are

  • Dogs show loyalty.
  • Ants are hard workers and team players.
  • Dolphins are smart.
  • Elephants are strong.
  • Gorilla is gentle but powerful, a good parent, and a good leader.

12. What did you like most about your last job?

  • Unfortunately, this could be a trick question where they ask about things you didn’t like in your previous job.
  • The best answer is to say that you enjoyed everything about your last job; however, you feel that you have learned all you could in that role and are now looking for new challenges.

13. Why did you leave your last job?

Let’s first discuss what not to say!

  • Do not say anything negative about your previous employer
  • Do not say for money.
  • The commute was too long.

“I enjoyed my time at my last job, but, I have outgrown my current role and I am looking for new challenges.”

14. How was your attendance in your last job?

  • Be honest when answering this question as the interviewer may check references.
  • Emphasize that you understand the importance of starting your shift on time.

15. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long for their order.
  • Customers receive friendly service.
  • The restaurant is clean both inside and outside.
  • The product is made to order.

16. Can you tell us about a time you have gone above and beyond for a customer?

  • Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which will, in turn, generate more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a specific dessert in the restaurant. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it and I got it for the customer.   
  • Here’s another example: I worked at a fast-food chain in my last job.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant and he had finished his meal. The rain started, and he started to worry because he didn’t have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.
