  • Jack Astor’s is a casual dining chain with locations in Alberta, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.
  • The restaurant makes over 200 recipes in-house.
  • All restaurants include a dining area and a bar area.  
  • Jack Astor’s headquarters are in Burlington Ontario.
  • The first location opened in St. Catherines Ontario.
  • Service Inspired Restaurants (SIR Corp) is the parent company of Jack Astors. Sir Corp also runs Scaddabush, Reds, Canyon Creek, Dukes Refresher and Bar, and Abbey’s Bakehouse.
  • Finally, customers can use the Inspired Rewards mobile app at Jack Astors. The app allows people to reserve a table online, order delivery, order curbside, get rewards, pay with the app, and earn up to 50% off.

  • Talk about any customer service experience you may have.
  • If this is your first job, tell them you have been focusing on school and now you are anxious to prove yourself in the workforce.

3. Why do you want to work at Jack Astor’s

  • If going to university state, you think working at Jack Astor’s will be a great way to pay for school.
  • Tell them you enjoy the food and state your favorite item on the menu. (Tip!! Why not like Jack Astor’s on Facebook and state an item you saw and wanted; this will show you truly do like them).
  • State you enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and enjoy working with customers and you think working at Jack Astor’s will allow you to do both.

4. Why should I hire you?

  • Look at the job description and find the essential skills and experience required to do the job. Reassure the interviewer that you have the skills and expertise necessary to do the position. Note your answer needs to demonstrate that you are the solution to the employer’s problem (a vacancy on their team) and that you are the best person for the role.

5. Can you work weekends/nights?

  • It is in your best interest to be as flexible as possible so it will be in your best interest to say yes.   Most Jack Astor’s are open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. so try and be available for those hours.

6. What are your career goals?

  • If you are going to university tell them what you plan on doing when you finish.
  • Possible goals that align with Jack Astor’s business include restaurant management, chef, or even accounting.

7. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Jack Astors will ask this question because they want to see if you a good fit at their restaurant or the restaurant industry in general. They will also ask this question to see that you have ambition.

Note that not every applicant will say they want a career in the restaurant industry because they are looking for part-time or summer work.

However, if your 5-year career goals align with Jack Astor’s line of business, odds are you will sound better than other applicants.

  • Remember to state-related experience so if you have experience serving, cleaning, working with customers, or any restaurant experience at all mention that first.

Why do you want to be a server at Jack Astors?

  • Say you would like a job that keeps you active, and you feel you have strong customer service skills so you feel you would be a good fit for this role.

How would you greet a customer?

  • First I would greet them with a smile and once they were seated I would give them their menus and tell them about any specials offered.

Tell us how would you deal with an upset customer.

  • Say you would give them your full attention and apologize for any inconvenience. Mention you would then note the complaint, give it to your manager, and make a constant effort to improve.
  • Finally, say you believe reputation is everything and it is important to keep the customer happy as an unhappy customer will not come back, and may even tell others about their negative experience.

How do you handle pressure at work?

  • I feel I deal with it well. I am good at prioritizing and focusing on the tasks that need to be completed one by one.

How did you fill your downtime at work?

  • All jobs have some downtime and they want to know that you used your time efficiently. Usually, I spent my downtime cleaning. I would often polish the silverware, or help bus tables. In addition, I set tables and took reservation orders.

Can you give us an example of when you came in late and what were the reasons?

  • Everyone has had a situation where they have arrived late to work but a good answer is to anticipate it and let your manager know.
  • For example, I had a child that was sick and I phoned the manager the night before to let him know I would be late. I fully understand the importance of arriving on time as the restaurant can’t operate properly without the proper staffing, so there are very few times I was late.
