1. Tell me about yourself?

  • It’s okay to talk about your hobbies and interests, but keep it brief. Try to focus on relevant work experience. Remember that relevant work experience will put you ahead of the competition.

2. Tell us about your previous work experience?

  • If possible, relate your previous work experience to the job you are applying for at KFC. Having work experience that relates to the job you are applying for will help your chances of getting the job.
  • Discuss previous work experience or volunteer experience when you don’t have any related experience.
  • If this is your first job and you lack any work experience, don’t panic. KFC hires many individuals without prior experience. You can inform them that you have been concentrating on your education and are eager to demonstrate your abilities in the workforce.

  • KFC or Kentucky Fried Chicken is an American quick-service restaurant, known for its fried chicken.
  • KFC’s menu includes the original recipe, extra crispy, Kentucky Grilled Chicken, Colonel’s crispy strips, hot wings, KFC snacker sandwich, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, and homestyle biscuits.
  • KFC is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, and was founded by Harland Sanders.
  • Yum! Brands is the parent company of KFC. It also operates Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and The Habit Burger Grill.

4. Why do you want to work at KFC?

Possible answers are

  • Tell the interviewer that you enjoy the product and the service you get at KFC and would be proud to represent them.
  • If you are a student mention that KFC is a great way to pay for school.
  • State you enjoy the challenge of working under pressure.
  • Mention you feel you have strong communication skills which will allow you to work well with KFC customers and other colleagues.

5. What hours can you work?

  • Try and be flexible when answering this question. The more relaxed you are with your hours, the better your chance of landing the job.
  • State that you understand if you need to work on weekends and holidays. 

6. Why should I hire you?

  • Have a look at the job description, and find the key skills and experience required for the job. Reassure the interviewer that you have the skills and experience that are required to do the position. Note your answer needs to demonstrate that you are the solution to the employer’s problem (a vacancy on their team), and that you are the best person for the role.

7. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience you have that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Therefore, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

8. What is your greatest weakness?

  • You should not deny that you have a weakness or state strengths as a weakness (I am a perfectionist or I work too hard and neglect my friends and family). Instead, think of a weakness that is required but not critical for the job and state that as your weakness.
  • When you state your weakness make sure you include what you are doing to overcome that weakness. For example, I have a fear of public speaking and enrolled in a public speaking class to overcome my fear.

9. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

10. How would you define excellent customer service? 

  • The customer is not waiting long for their order.
  • Customers receive friendly service.
  • The restaurant is clean both inside and outside.
  • The product is made to order.

11. Why do you believe customer service is so important?

Great customer service can

  • Increase customer loyalty
  • Grow the amount of money each customer spends per visit
  • Increase how often a customer buys from you
  • Generate positive word-of-mouth about your business

12. Why did you leave your last job?

Interviewers ask this question for the following reasons

  • Did you leave for a good reason?
  • Did you leave voluntarily?
  • Did you leave on good terms?
  • What are your work values?

Sample Answer

“I enjoyed my last job, however, I felt growth was minimal and I was no longer learning. I want to explore new challenges”.

13. What do you like most about your current or last job?

  • Unfortunately, this can be a trick question as they may be looking for things you didn’t like in your last job.
  • The best answer is to say that you enjoyed everything about your last job, however, you feel that you have learned all you can in that role and are now looking for new challenges.

14. How would your previous boss describe you?

Stating you have any of the characteristics below is a great way to answer this question. 

  • My boss would describe me as motivated, enthusiastic, respectful, curious,  presentable, happy, honest, polite, smart, ambitious, high energy, hospitable, and conscientious.

15. Tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which, in turn, generates more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

Here are two examples

  1. When I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it, and I was able to get it for them
  2. In my last job, I worked at a fast-food chain, and one day, there was a senior citizen at the restaurant who had finished his meal. It started to rain, and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had one, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

16. Could you tell me about a time your punctuality or attendance impacted your work?

  • Everyone misses work from time to time but make sure you have a good reason. Also, explain what you did to reduce the negative impact of your absence.
  • For example, I worked at a popular fast-food chain and I was unable to attend my shift due to an illness. I did phone several team members and I was able to find someone to cover my shift.

17. Tell us about a time you disagreed with a coworker or manager and what was the outcome?

  • It is only natural to have conflict at work. What is important is how you and your colleague come up with a positive outcome.

18. Are you good at math?

  • They will always need someone to work the cash register. If you are not great at math not to worry as it is just addition and subtraction.

19. What motivates you?

Employers ask this question because they want to see your resiliency, determination on how you’ll handle challenges and setbacks.

Say

  • Meeting deadlines, targets, or goals.
  • Mentoring and coaching others.
  • Learning new things.
  • Coming up with creative ideas to improve something or make something new.
  • Working well as part of a team.
  • Finding a way to solve a problem or overcome a challenge.

20. How do you feel about working the drive-thru?

  • State you will enjoy the challenge of working the drive-thru and that you look forward to working with customers.

21. Why is a personal appearance so important?

  • Since the majority of roles at KFC are customer-facing then personal appearance is very important.  Customers need to feel people servicing the food are hygienic which can be seen through personal appearance.  

22. Who are our competitors?

  • KFC’s competitors are Popeyes, Nando’s, and Churches Chicken. More and more Americans are eating less beef and McDonald’s and Burger King have begun to offer more chicken menu items.

23. If you could be one animal what would it be?

Interviewers ask this question because it may reveal more about your character, or see how you operate under stress.

When you state what animal you would be, state why.

Possible Answers are

  • Dogs to demonstrate loyalty
  • Ants are hard workers and team-players
  • Dolphins are smart
  • Elephants are strong
  • Gorilla is gentle but powerful, a good parent, and a good leader

24. What are your salary expectations?

  • This is a stressful question because if you ask for too much, you will not get the job and if you ask for too little, they will gladly underpay you.
  • Be sure to research salary expectations for your role before you go into the interview. There are plenty of sites that will discuss salary ranges.
  • If you don’t know what to say, ask what the salary range is?  You can then counter with the high end of the range. 

25. Do you have any questions for us?

  • What do you like best about working here?
  • How would you describe your ideal candidate for this position?
  • What about this position is the most important?
  • How would you measure my success and what could I do to exceed your expectations?
  • Which part of the position has the steepest learning curve? What can I do to get up to speed quickly?
  • What opportunities will I have to learn and grow?

  • Don’t speak too quickly in the interview as you will sound nervous.
  • If you are applying for an entry-level position your wage will be minimum.  If you are not applying for a minimum wage position have a look at salary ranges on the internet.
  • Be sure you make good eye contact.
  • Have good body posture as it will prevent you from mumbling.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak up if you are on a KFC Group Interview.

How do I prepare for a KFC Interview?

  • Learn as much as you can about the company and ask yourself why you want to work there.  Why would you rather work at KFC than any other quick-service restaurant?
  • Review potential interview questions and think about how you will answer them from your personal experience.  
  • Think about where you see yourself in the future?  KFC will prefer to hire people whose career goals align with the restaurant industry.  Perhaps you want to open your own franchise one day or become a restaurant general manager.  Note if you want to work at KFC to pay for your education that is fine but make sure you demonstrate that you are committed to working there for more than a few months.
  • Make sure you know where you are going and how long it takes to get there. Go online and work out the easiest way to get there, then be sure to add on extra time so you are on time. The last thing you want is to arrive late.

What to wear to a KFC Interview

  • You want to look like someone who can serve food so if you have long hair wear it back.
  • Guys shave any facial hair.
  • Have a look at what other KFC employees are wearing and dress one step better.  Your best bet is to dress business casual.

What skills do you need to work at KFC?

  • Communication skills as you will be working with customers.
  • Teamwork as no one individual can operate a restaurant by themselves.
  • Attention to detail as customers orders have to be made exactly the way they want it and the restaurant has to be clean and orderly.
  • Punctual since other team members will depend on you.
  • Work well under pressure as restaurants get extremely busy at rush hours.
