1. Tell me about yourself?

  • It’s okay to talk about your hobbies and interests but keep it brief. Try and focus on related work experience. Remember having related work experience will put you ahead of the competition.

2. What can you tell us about Metro?

About Metro

  • It is a large supermarket chain located in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Metro is the 3rd largest grocery store chain after Loblaws and Sobeys.
  • In 2005, Metro acquired A&P Canada, and in 2018 Metro acquired The Jean Coutu Group.
  • The supermarket also runs Super C and Food Basics which are Metro’s discount supermarkets.
  • The headquarters are in Montreal Quebec.

3. What do you want to work for us?

  • If you are going to university tell them you think working here would be a great way to pay for university.
  • Mention you like the fact that they are concerned about the environment (Metro’s flyers are made from recycled paper).
  • Mention you like the green apple school program that will fight childhood obesity.

4. Where do you see yourself in five years?

  • If you are going to university tell them what you plan on doing after you finish.
  • Say you would like a career in retail management if you plan on staying at Metro.
  • If you are lucky enough to work in Montreal there mention you would like to explore corporate opportunities.
  • Have a look at other Metro Jobs and find a job you can see yourself doing in five years.

5. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience that you have which directly correlate with the job you are applying for. With this in mind, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

6. What is your greatest weakness?

  • You don’t have a weakness
  • You can’t think of a weakness

  • Steps to improve your weakness
Example

My greatest weakness is I take criticism too personally. I have learned not to overreact and think about what was said. I have found that I have become a better employee when I learn from feedback.

7. What hours can you work?

  • Try to be flexible when answering this question. The more flexible you are with your hours, the better chance you will have of landing the job.
  • State you understand if you need to work weekends and holidays. 

8. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

9. Tell us about a time when you went above and beyond for a customer?

Customers love when you go above and beyond for them which will, in turn, generate more business. Try and think of a time you went above and beyond for a customer.

Here are two examples

  1. When I was a server at a restaurant we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it and I was able to get it for them.  
  2. In my last job, I worked at a fast-food chain and a senior citizen at the restaurant had finished his meal.  It started to rain and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car sheltering him from the rain.

10. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long at checkout.
  • The grocery store is clean both inside and outside.
  • Customers receive friendly and helpful service.
  • The inventory is well stocked and supplied.

11. How do you feel about standing on your feet for long periods of time?

  • If possible tell the interviewer you do not have a problem with this as most jobs in retail will require you to work on your feet for long periods of time. Try to wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

12. Why did you leave your last job?

Let’s first discuss what not to say!

  • Do not say anything negative about your previous employer.
  • Do not say for money. 
  • The commute was too long.
Example

“I enjoyed my time at my last job, however, I have outgrown my current role and I am looking for new challenges.”

13. Who are our competitors?

  • Metro’s competitors are Loblaws and Sobeys.

14. Do you have any questions for us?

  • What do you like best about working here? 
  • How would you describe your ideal candidate for this position? 
  • If I were to start tomorrow what would be my top priority? 
  • What is the history of this position? 
  • What about this position is the most important? 
  • How would you measure my success, and what could I do to succeed in your expectations? 
  • Which part of the position has the steepest learning curve? What can I do to get up to speed quickly?
  • What opportunities will I have to learn and grow?

  • Turn off your cell phone.
  • Learn as much as you can about the grocery store.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early.
  • Don’t talk too fast as you will sound nervous.
  • Don’t talk too slow as you will sound boring.
