3. Where do you see yourself in five years?

  • If you are going to university state what you see yourself doing in five years.
  • If you plan on staying at Sobey’s look at their career website and look for future opportunities you could see yourself doing.

4. Why should I hire you?

Here I recommend you revisit the job description and find the key skills they are looking for.   If you have those skills you can reassure the interviewer why he or she should hire you.  Suppose you had a Sobeys Cashier Interview and you found in the job description that they are looking for someone who has strong interpersonal and communication skills.  They are also looking for someone who has excellent customer service skills and has retail experience.

  • Say you have excellent interpersonal and communication skills which will allow you to work well in a team.
  • Mention you have excellent customer service skills which will allow you to work well with the customer.
  • State you have several years in retail (if this is indeed the case).

5. Are you good at math?

  • If they ask this they want you to be a cashier. If you are not good at math tell them you can do basic addition and subtraction. Also, mention you are comfortable learning new technology.

6. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience that you have which directly correlate with the job you are applying for. With this in mind, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

7. What is your greatest weakness?

8. How do you feel about standing on your feet all day?

  • Most jobs in retail will require you to work on your feet for long periods of time. If possible tell the interviewer you do not have a problem with this. Try to wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with a low heel, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

9. What hours can you work?

  • The more flexible you are with your hours, the better chance you have of getting hired, so be flexible!
  • If possible, let the interviewer know that you can work on weekends and/or holidays.

10. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
  • Finally, it is important not to take it personally.  If you get upset you will take it on future customers.
