Can you tell us about yourself?

  • It’s okay to discuss your hobbies and interests; but, keep it brief. Try to focus on relevant work experience. Remember that having relevant work experience will put you ahead of the competition.

Can you tell us about your previous work experience?

  • If possible, relate any previous work experience you have to the job you are applying for at Steak ‘n Shake. For example, perhaps you have experience in customer service or cooking. Customer service and cooking are both examples of what skills Shake ‘n Shake is looking for.
  • If this is your first job tell them you have been focusing on school and now you are anxious to prove yourself in the workforce.

Why do you want to work for Steak’n Shake?

  • State that you like the products and customer service you get at Steak ‘N Shake and that you would be proud to work for them.
  • If possible, like them on Facebook and tell them about a product you saw and wanted. This will show you truly like Steak’n Shake.

What is your greatest strength?

  • I am a quick learner (this is a great answer because they will have to spend less time training you)
  • I work well under pressure (this is a great answer because Steak’n Shake will have their rush hour and you need to stay focused during this time)

What is your greatest weakness?

  • It would help if you did not deny you have a weakness or state strengths as a weakness. For example, do not say “I am a perfectionist” or “I work too hard and neglect my friends and family”. State a fault required for the role but not a dealbreaker if you don’t have it.
  • When you state your weakness, make sure you say what you are doing to overcome that weakness. For example, I have a fear of public speaking and enrolled in a public speaking class to overcome my fear.

What can you tell us about Steak ‘N Shake?

  • A. H. “Gus” Belt founded Steak ‘N Shake in February 1934 in Normal Illinois.
  • The founder would wheel in a barrel of steaks and grind the meat into his burgers to show his product is exceptionally prime. This is why the Shake ‘n Shake slogan is “In Site. It Must Be Right”.
  • Steak ‘N Shake offers breakfast (midnight to 11 am), lunch and dinner, a late-night menu (midnight to 6 am), and a kid’s menu.

Customer Service Interview Questions

How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • I would find out what is wrong with the customer. If it was the product I would offer to replace it (mention you would check with your manager first) it is important to keep the customer happy as an unhappy customer will never return.

Can you tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

  • Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which will, in turn, generate more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a specific dessert in the restaurant. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it and I was able to get it for the customer.   
  • Here’s another example: I worked at a fast-food chain in my last job.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant and he had finished his meal. The rain started, and he started to worry because he didn’t have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

This question is designed to see if you have goals and ambition

  • If going to college or university state what you would like to be doing after you finish.
  • If you don’t know what to say, perhaps consider a career in restaurant management (this will make you sound like a good fit for Steak n’ Shake).

Why should I hire you?

  • Look at the job description and find the key skills and experience required to do the job. Reassure the interviewer that you have the skills and experience required to do the position. Note your answer needs to show that you are the solution to the employer’s problem (a vacancy on their team) and that you are the best person for the role.

What hours can you work?

  • The more flexible you are with your hours, the better your chance of getting hired, so be flexible!
  • Let the interviewer know you can work on weekends and/or holidays if possible.

Why did you leave your last job?

  • Learning new things.
  • Coming up with creative ideas to improve something, or make something new.
  • Working well as part of a team.
  • Finding a way to solve a problem, or overcome a challenge.

Don’t Say!

  • Money is your motivator. The only exception is if you are in sales
  • Employee Discounts.

What to wear to a Steak n Shake interview?

  • Dress business casually if you are applying for a non-management position.
  • Remember you want to look like someone who can serve food so if you have long hair wear it back and wear a minimal amount of jewelry.
