How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • I would give the customer my full attention and listen to their complaint.  I would note the complaint and see if I could resolve their issue.  Finally, I would tell my manager what happened so we could contentiously improve the service at the restaurant.

Why do you want to be a server?

Possible answers include:

  • Say you enjoy working with customers.
  • Mention you like the challenge of working under pressure.
  • Finally, say you enjoy working in a team.

How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long for their meal.
  • The customer is greeted in a friendly manner.

How do you feel about sharing your tips?

  • Say you don’t have any problem sharing your tips.  Most restaurants share tips with the kitchen.   This is common in the restaurant industry.

Tell me about a time you gave excellent customer service?

  • Only you can answer this question with your own personal story.  The Keg is notorious for asking if you are celebrating a special occasion and if so you get a free dessert.

What do you think are the most important qualities in a server?

  • The servers appearance is presentable in the manner they can serve food. For example, if one has long hair they wear it back, any facial hair is well trimmed, the clothes worn are presentable.
  • They have excellent listening skills and can recommend an item that best suits the customers’ tastes.
  • They can work under pressure and not jeopardize excellent customer service.
