1. Can you tell us about your previous work experience?

  • Try to focus on related work experience as having related work experience will put you ahead of the competition. For example, if you have experience working as a cashier, stocking shelves, or customer service experience and the other interviewers do not then you have a better chance of landing the job.

3. What can you tell us about IGA?

  • IGA is a chain of grocery stores that operate in over 30 countries.
  • IGA was founded in 1926 as the Independent Grocers Alliance.

  • In Canada (excluding B.C.) IGA is owned by Sobeys. Today, Sobeys, which franchises the name.
  • IGA stores are independently owned and operated in B.C.  

USA

  • The stores in the alliance remain independently owned and operated. The alliance oversees several resources shared among the member stores. These include, most visibly, the IGA store brand products and the logistical network that distributes them.
  • IGA uses the “Hometown Proud Supermarkets” slogan.
  • Many IGA grocery stores are still located in smaller cities and towns throughout the United States.

4. What hours can you work?

  • The more flexible you are with your hours, the better your chance of getting hired, so be flexible!
  • Let the interviewer know if you can work on weekends and holidays.

5. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The staff is friendly and always willing to help the customer find what he or she needs.
  • Customers are not waiting in line for long periods at checkout.
  • The store display is well-kept and presented with adequate inventory.

6. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
  • Finally, one must not take it personally.  If you get upset, you will take it out on future customers.

7. How do you feel about standing for long periods?

  • Most jobs in retail will require you to work on your feet for long periods. Tell the interviewer you do not have a problem with this. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

8. If you could be one animal what would it be?

Possible Answers are

  • Dogs show loyalty.
  • Ants are hard workers and team players.
  • Dolphins are smart.
  • Elephants are strong.
  • Gorilla is gentle but powerful, a good parent, and a good leader.

9. Why did you leave your last job?

  • Do not say anything negative about your previous employer
  • Do not say for money.
  • The commute was too long.

10. How would your previous manager ask you?

  • State your manager would describe you as someone who is a strong communicator, organized, a team player, and someone who works well under pressure.

11. What motivates you?

Employers ask this question because they want to see your resiliency, and determination in how you’ll handle challenges and setbacks.
