1. Tell us about yourself?

  • It’s okay to talk about your hobbies and interests but keep it brief. Try and focus on related work experience. Remember having related work experience will put you ahead of the competition.

2. Why do you want to work at Screwfix?

  • State you feel you have great communication skills which will allow you to work well with customers and other team members.
  • Mention you would prefer a job that keeps you active.

3. Why should Screwfix hire you?

  • Discuss any related work experience and how you can apply this experience to the job at Screwfix.
  • Tell the interviewer you are a good communicator, work well under pressure, and are a quick learner.

4. What hours can you work?

  • The more flexible you are with your hours, the better chance you have of getting hired, so be flexible!
  • If possible, let the interviewer know that you can work on weekends and/or holidays.

  • Screwfix is the largest home improvement retailer in the UK.
  • Screwfix offers over 10,000 products available for pickup from 855 stores nationwide. 
  • In July 1999, Screwfix was acquired by Kingfisher Inc.
  • Kingfisher Inc. acquired Screwfix in July 1999.

6. Who are its competitors?

  • Its competitors include B&M, Argos, Wiklko, Wickes, and Homebase. Note B&Q is not a competitor as it is under the kingfisher family.

7. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
  • Finally, it is important not to take it personally.  If you get upset you will take it on future customers.

8. Tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

  • Customers love when you go above and beyond for them which will, in turn, generate more business. Try and think of a time you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant we did not have a particular dessert in the restaurant. Luckily the restaurant next door had it and I was able to get it for the customer.   
  • Here’s another example: in my last job I worked at a fast-food chain.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant and he had finished his meal.  It started to rain and he was worried, as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

9. Why is customer service so important?

Great customer service can

  • Increase customer loyalty
  • Grow the amount of money each customer spends per visit
  • Increase how often a customer buys from you
  • Generate positive word-of-mouth about your business

11. How do you feel about standing on your feet for long periods?

  • Most jobs in retail will require you to work on your feet for long periods. If possible tell the interviewer you do not have a problem with this. Try to wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

12. How would your previous manager describe you?

  • Successful employees are strong communicators, leaders, organized, team players, work well under pressure, and are good listeners.
  • If you have kept old performance reviews from previous companies paraphrase positive reviews from previous managers.

13. How well do you work under pressure?

  • You want to state you work well under pressure. However, tell the interviewer you do not have problems asking for help and are willing to help others.

14. What motivates you?

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A SCREWFIX INTERVIEW

  • Learn as much as you can about the company and ask yourself why you want to work there.  Why would you work at ScrewFix than its competitors?
  • Review potential interview questions and think about how you will answer them from your personal experience.  
  • Think about where you see yourself in the future.  ScrewFix will want to hire people whose career goals align with the retail industry.  Perhaps you want to get into retail management.  Note if you want to work at ScrewFix to pay for your education that is fine but make sure you demonstrate that you are committed to working there for more than a few months.
  • Make sure you know where you are going and how long it takes to get there. Go online and work out the easiest way to get there, then be sure to add on extra time so you are on time. The last thing you want is to arrive late.
