7. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The staff is friendly and always willing to help the customer find what he or she needs.
  • Customers are not waiting in line for long periods at checkout.
  • The store display is well-kept and presented with adequate inventory.

8. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • I would determine the cause of their dissatisfaction. If the customer expressed unhappiness regarding a previously purchased item, I would inquire whether they have their receipt. If they do, I would guide them to customer service for a refund or a replacement of the item. Alternatively, if the customer is frustrated by an inability to locate a specific product, I would personally assist in finding it instead of just giving general directions.

9. Tell us about a time when you went above and beyond for a customer?

  • Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which will, in turn, generate more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a specific dessert in the restaurant. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it and I got it for the customer.   
  • Here’s another example: I worked at a fast-food chain in my last job.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant and he had finished his meal. The rain started, and he started to worry because he didn’t have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.

  • The best answer is to say that you enjoyed everything about your last job; however, you feel that you have learned all you could in that role and are now looking for new challenges.

15. How do you handle stress?

It is only natural to get stressed at work. What is important is how you deal with it.  

Below is a possible answer: 

When I have too many tasks, I step back, take a deep breath, and prioritize what I need to do.  I usually complete quick wins or high-priority tasks first.  I also use stress as a motivator.  I get great job satisfaction when I successfully handle a stressful day.

16. Can you tell me about a time you had a conflict at work and how you resolved it?

It is only natural to have occasional conflicts at work.  The important thing is how you and your colleague came up with a positive outcome.

For example, in my last job, I worked in retail and stocked shelves.  While doing this, I placed the items I felt had the most marketing appeal at eye level.  My manager told me to place perishable products or merchandise with high-profit margins at a height that will be at eye level for the average person when stocking shelves. When discussing this issue, I listened to what my manager was saying and did not argue. I understood my mistake and stocked shelves the way my manager wanted me to. I also felt I learned a valuable lesson in marketing.

17. What experience do you have?

  • If you have any retail or cashier experience, talk about it.  If you don’t have retail experience or any other type of experience, don’t worry.  Walmart hires lots of first-time workers.

18. Why should I hire you?

It doesn’t matter if you are applying for a position as an overnight stocker, pharmacy technician, or department manager, the best way to answer this question is to re-read the job description and find skills that you have, that match that job description. After rereading the job description for the cashier, here is what I found:

  • Provides excellent customer service by Practicing the 10-Foot Attitude. Here, we have the first skill, which is people skills.
  • Must maintain excellent productivity levels by scanning merchandise quickly and accurately. Skill number two: working quickly and accurately.
  • Achieving the scanning percentage goal. Attending all Cashier training sessions. The third skill is being a quick learner.
  • Looking at the qualification section, it states they are looking for someone with mathematical skills, notability adding and subtracting, and working with decimals.  This leads to skill number four, which is math skills.  Note, you do not have to be a math professor to be good at making change for a customer, so state you have great math skills.

Taking the information above into account, when asked “why should I hire you?” at your cashier interview:

  1. Mention that you have excellent people skills and enjoy meeting new people.
  2. Say that you can perform tasks quickly and accurately.
  3. State that you are a quick learner.
  4. Finally, say that you have great math skills and are comfortable making change.

19. What motivates you?

Possible answers are:

20. What are your salary expectations?

  • This is a stressful question because if you ask for too much, you will not get the job, and if you ask for too little, they will happily underpay you.
  • Be sure to research salary expectations for your role before you go into the interview. There are plenty of sites that discuss salary ranges.
  • Ask about the salary range if you don’t know what to say.  You can then counter with the high end of the range.
  • Note most entry-level jobs will pay minimum wage.

  • If you are a student tell the interviewer you plan on staying at Walmart as long as you are in college or university.
  • Tell the interviewer you plan on staying as long as there is career growth, which you feel is very possible if you work hard at Walmart.

25. Do you prefer working at the register or on the floor?

  • There is no wrong answer to this question. Both require standing for long periods and communication with customers.

26. How do you feel about marketing Walmart credit cards?

  • Cashiers often offer customers Walmart Credit Cards. Be sure to check out any benefits the credit card may offer.
  • State that you would find marketing these credit cards an exciting challenge and that you would enjoy telling customers about any perks they would enjoy by having the card.

  • For an entry-level job interview, opt for business casual attire and avoid wearing shorts or jeans.
  • When interviewing for a management position, dress formally or in business casual. Consider wearing blazers and dark trousers or wrap dresses for females. Avoid sportswear.
